THE GOLDEN DREGS AMERICAN AIRLINES
The London-based band of Cornwall-born musician/songwriter Benjamin Woods, the GOLDEN DREGS sign to 4AD and share their melancholy slow-burner 'American Airlines'. One of those tracks that gets better with every listen, an intentionally monotonous bass groove reflects the drudgery of life in the pandemic and the feeling of putting life on hold as Woods' croons enigmatically about escapism and a desire to experience life in the moment. The masterfully arranged piece introduces further instrumentation gradually, allowing each part to shine, from distant piano twinkles to simmering brass parts and twangy guitar lines, building slowly like a wave rolling into a bay in Woods' hometown. Taken from the forthcoming album On Grace & Dignity, arriving on the 10th of February 2023, 'American Airlines' is a thoughtful introduction to the LP, which explores themes of contrast. Woods notes: "There’s different parts of the experience of growing up in Cornwall in there. Some of it was from me looking at it when I was down there that winter, and some of it was me harking back to the experience of growing up there. It’s defined by that sense of duality, of coexisting realities. You’re geographically so far away, and it has a strong identity of its own, as well as a different landscape. It’s so rugged and bleak, but beautiful – which is what I really like in music." Watch the video directed by Dinomoves here now. -Holly Mullineaux
